On the Côte de Lumière, between the ocean, forest and marshes, the Ironman Les Sables d'Olonne-Vendée quickly established itself as one of triathletes' favourite events. Depending on the year, the race is held in the full-distance or 70.3 format, two versions of the same setting and the same passion, and it regularly ranks among the circuit's highest-rated races.
Everything starts at the Grande Plage, the starting point for the swim. Athletes set off towards the channel of the Vendée Globe, the iconic passage where skippers head out to sea, with the quays and spectators close by. The bike leg then heads into the Vendée hinterland, through the Olonne forest, marshes and villages, on a fast but never monotonous course where the gradual inclines make themselves felt. The run finally brings everyone back into town, over several loops around the harbour, beach and famous Remblai, facing the ocean.
This is where the event truly comes into its own. Along the promenade, spectators are numerous, loud and warm-hearted, and the festive atmosphere accompanies every athlete all the way to the finish arch. Whether curious beginners or competitors aiming to qualify, everyone finds a setting worthy of the effort.
