Between the Mediterranean and the mountains of the Sierra Blanca, Ironman 70.3 Marbella combines the glamour of the Costa del Sol with a demanding course, selective enough to have hosted the 70.3 World Championship. The 1.9 km swim starts from the beach near Puerto Banús, in open water whose conditions change from one morning to the next. The 90 km bike course then heads into the Andalusian hinterland, with the climb to the white village of Ojén, long descents and beautiful views over the coast, on a route that is far hillier than you might expect from a seaside resort.
The half marathon is finally run along the seafront, over several laps of Marbella's promenade, where large crowds turn out to cheer the athletes all the way to the finish. Under the Andalusian autumn sun, this race with the feel of a major festival is as much about the experience as the competition, leaving you eager to extend your stay among the old town, beaches and tapas.
