Some Ironman races are chosen for the time, and others for the scenery: Cascais clearly belongs to the second category, without sacrificing any of the challenge. Half an hour from Lisbon, this seaside resort hosts the start of a full-distance course (3.8 km of swimming, 180 km of cycling, and 42.195 km of running) that takes in a succession of stunning landscapes. The swim takes place in Cascais Bay, starting from Ribeira Beach, in sheltered waters. Cyclists then head towards the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, passing Guincho Beach and the roads of the Sintra Mountains, before a lap of the Estoril circuit, once home to the Portuguese Formula 1 Grand Prix.
The elevation gain, very real, makes this bike leg a true test of patience. The marathon finally takes place alongside the ocean, heading towards Cabo Raso, before returning to the centre of Cascais, carried along by the enthusiastic support of the spectators. Held in late autumn, the event offers triathletes from around the world a magnificent setting in which to round off their season, as well as the chance to earn a place at the world championships.
