In Cassis, at the foot of Cap Canaille and just a stone’s throw from the Calanques, the Sardines Triathlon combines sporting performance with a festive atmosphere in one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful settings. Created by a club born out of camaraderie and good humour, the event has welcomed triathletes of all levels for more than ten years, with an M-distance triathlon as its headline race: 1.5 km of swimming, 41 km of cycling and 10 km of running. The swim takes place in the clear waters of the bay, the bike course passes through Cassis and neighbouring towns along rolling roads between vineyards and Provençal hills, and the run unfolds around the town on a challenging course.
Aquathlons for young athletes and trail races on the route of the Défi Calendal round out the weekend, which is as much a sporting celebration as a competition, with the colourful harbour, terraces and the gentle Provençal autumn weather adding to the experience.
